Festive season in full swing in Flinders Shire

Flinders Shire recently held its annual Christmas Street Party in Hughenden, with more than 400 people attending and getting into the festive spirit.

Attendees enjoyed more than 18 market stalls and all Brodie Street shops were open for business to help celebrate the event, while Santa also made a special appearance.

The Shop Local This Christmas campaign saw thousands of entries across the Shire, with Tony Dennis named as winner of the $1,000 prize donated by Hughenden Chamber of Commerce.

The campaign saw people enter the competition by spending more than $20 in one transaction at any business in the Flinders Shire.

Sheldon Rogers beat 51 other entries to be announced as winner of the Get the Jab in Flinders competition, which aimed to further increase COVID vaccination rates in the Shire.

Any local resident who had at least one COVID vaccination was able to enter the draw to win either a Family Pool Pass for one year to the Hughenden Pool, or an individual annual pass to the Hughenden community gym.

Mayor Jane McNamara said the Christmas Street Party was once again a huge success.

“It was fantastic to see so many local residents out and about celebrating the Christmas season,” she said.

“Santa is always popular, but the open markets and businesses were also a big hit."

Attendees were also treated to performances from our local dance school, Branches Performing Arts, and theatre duo Dramarama.

The Flinders Shire Council Community Care team once again hosted its annual Christmas luncheon for clients, family, and friends recently.

Attendees were treated to a two-course lunch, with great entertainment by Cecily Paul, and a special visit from Santa.

“We wish to thank everyone who attended and supported the event,” said Cr McNamara.

“A special thank you to our local business community that donated lucky door prizes. The team were overwhelmed by their generosity and everyone went home with a prize.”
